How to Use WMA Downloadable with Windows Media Player

System requirements:

  • Microsoft® Windows XP or VistaTM
  • A high-speed Internet connection (for both downloading and licensing)
  • The PC must have Windows Media Player, version 10 or higher, installed
  • The RFB&D® Download Manager software (see "Downloading Books")
  • You also will need a valid, Learning Ally account login and password
  • Please note: WMA Downloadable books will not play on Apple® Macintosh computers or iPods® at this time

How to license and read your book:

After you have ordered and downloaded your first AudioAccess downloaded book, you can access and read your book through Windows Media Player.

  • Open Windows Media Player on your computer from the Start Menu
  • WMA downloaded books automatically appear in the Windows Media Player library under Artist “Learning Ally.” You may also see your book listed as an album or on a playlist
  • Highlight the book you want to read and you will see track titles that show both page number and chapter heading
  • Ensure the volume on your computer speakers is turned on or you have headphones plugged into the computer
  • Highlight the track you want to play and click on the play button on your screen
  • The first time you try to play your book, you will be required to license it with Learning Ally. You will be sent temporarily to the Learning Ally License Acquisition page where you will need to provide your Customer login and password. You only need to license a book once during your current membership period*
  • Once you have acquired the license for the book, you can read the book through Windows Media Player. Select the track you want to read and click the "Play" button

*For institutions, if you plan to download a book to more than one computer, you will need to acquire a license for the book on each computer.  Each license counts towards one book of your membership.

Speed and volume control

You can control the play speed and volume of your book on Windows Media Player.

  • Speed control:  You can access speed control in the “View” menu.  Click on “Enhancements” and then “Play Speed Settings” to speed up or slow down the play speed.  You can also access speed control from the “Play” menu, “Play Speed” selection.
  • Volume control:  You can access volume control at the bottom of the screen next to the play/pause button by clicking on the volume button. You can also access volume control by pressing F8 for lower volume, F9 for louder volume and F7 to mute the volume.
