How to use RFB&D Download Manager

Introduction

RFB&D Download Manager is a tool designed to make downloading RFB&D AudioAccess downloaded books as simple as possible. Because WMA Downloadable downloaded books consist of many files, it would be difficult to keep track of them all. RFB&D Download Manager does this for you, plus it allows you to control which parts of which books to download first, and can even remember where it left off, should your download be interrupted for some reason.

Installation

  1. Before starting the installation, be sure that you are logged into the computer using an account that has sufficient permissions to install software. You will also need an active Internet connection and permissions to download and run software from the Internet.

  2. To start the installation process, click on the RFB&D Download Manager link on the “My Downloads” page of the Customer Hub:

You must install RFB&D Download Manager before you can download and use RFB&D’s WMA Downloadable books. For full instructions on how to install the application, see the RFB&D Download Manager Installation Guide.

The first time that you run RFB&D Download Manager, it will need to activate itself by contacting the activation website. This will be done automatically for you, and you should see a dialog box containing the following message indicating success:

Starting a Download

RFB&D Download Manager is launched automatically when you download books from RFB&D’s Online Catalog and Ordering Center. To start a download, log onto your online account and go to the “My Downloads” page, which appears as follows:

RFBD Download Manager - Starting Download

On the page will be a chart with six columns: Product, Title, Ordered, Copies Used, Unused and Status. Under the “Status” column, click on the “Download” link for the book you wish to download. RFB&D Download Manager should launch automatically and begin downloading the book:

If RFB&D Download Manager does not start automatically, you may need to make manual adjustments to your browser settings. See the AudioAccess Troubleshooting Guide for details about how to do this.

Downloading Books

Structure of WMA Downloadable Books

RFB&D’s WMA Downloadable books consist of many audio files, one per page of the printed book. To simplify downloading, these are grouped by chapter (or other major book division) into ZIP files. A book may consist of any number of these chapter files: from only one to dozens or more, depending on the size and structure of the print book.

Each chapter file is self-contained – you do not need to download all the chapters in order to read a book. However, you must download an entire chapter before you can read any part of that chapter.

When you click on the “Download” link, the RFB&D website sends RFB&D Download Manager all the information about which files make up the book you have selected. RFB&D Download Manager then queues these up for download in book order. A blue circle with a white triangle in it – the “Downloading” icon, appears next to the file that is currently being downloaded (refer to screenshot above).

Pausing and Resuming

You can pause downloading at any time by clicking on the orange “Pause Button” in the toolbar. When RFB&D Download Manager is paused, you will not see the blue “Downloading” icon.

You can resume the download by clicking on the blue “Resume Button” on the toolbar.  RFB&D Download Manager will resume paused downloads at the point where it left off. If you pause in the middle of a large download, you will not need to re-download any part of the file.

You can pause the download, quit the application, and then resume again at any later time.  RFB&D Download Manager remembers which files were waiting to be downloaded, and it remembers where it left off on the last file. Even if your Internet connection is disrupted, RFB&D Download Manager will be able to resume your download without losing any of the data that it previously downloaded.

Downloading Specific Parts of a Book

As noted above, you do not need to download all the files of an WMA Downloadable book in order to begin reading it. Each chapter is self-contained and can be downloaded and read independently of the others. For example, if all you need is Chapter 1, you can just download that chapter, pause RFB&D Download Manager, and start reading. You can download the rest of the book later at your convenience.

You also can change the order in which RFB&D Download Manager downloads the chapters. Just double-click any individual file to move that file to the start of the queue and begin downloading it immediately. Or select one or more files in the list and then drag them up or down to change their order in the download queue.

RFBD Download Manager - Downloading Books

For example, if you wish to start reading George Orwell’s Animal Farm at Chapter Five, pause RFB&D Download Manager, then double-click that file to start downloading it right away:

To quickly move several files to the top of the queue, select them then right-click the mouse, and select the “To First in the Download Order” menu item. This will move all the selected files to the top of the queue.

After Downloading

Where Are My Files?

After RFB&D Download Manager completes downloading a chapter file, the file will disappear from the queue. The ZIP file itself will be stored under the “Saving” folder indicated in the Options screen under “Saving Files.” See the following dialog box:

RFBD Download Manager - Saving Files Dialog Box

By default, the folder in which the files will be stored is “My Documents\RFBD Downloads,” but you can change the folder storage location to be wherever you like.

To use WMA Downloadable books, have RFB&D Download Manager uncompress the chapter ZIP files after download. This is set in the “Saving Files” section of the Options screen (see above), and should be set correctly by default. RFB&D Download Manager will extract all of the individual pages from the chapter ZIP file and store them in the folder indicated in the Options screen (by default, “My Documents\RFBD Media Files”).

Finally, Download Manager will add the individual audio files to your Windows Media® Player library for you. Once download of a chapter file is complete, you should see the album and chapter tracks in your Windows Media Player library, as shown in the following screen shot:

Windows Media Player

If you have Windows Media Player open while downloading, changes to the Library may not show immediately. If you close Windows Media Player and then restart, you should see the tracks appear.

Re-downloading Files

RFB&D Download Manager will remember which files it downloaded, and you can re-download files if for some reason you should need to. A record of completed downloads is kept in the “Finished Downloads” section of the left-hand navigation pane on the main window. You can see downloads finished today, yesterday, or this week, as shown in the following screen shot:

This view only shows the ZIP file names and not the specific chapter information about the files.

RFBD Download Manager - Finished Downloads

To re-download a file, select the file and click the blue “Re-download” button on the toolbar (see screenshot above). The file will be added to the top of the download queue and downloading will begin immediately.
