Overview
The RFB&D Download Manager application is required to download your Downloadable DAISY books. Each Mac computer that will be used to download books will need this application installed. The system requirements are:
- Mac OS X 10.5 and higher for both Intel and PowerPC processors
- Firefox, version 3 or
- Safari, version 5
Installation
Before starting the installation, be sure that you are logged into the computer using an account that has sufficient permissions to install software. You will also need an active Internet connection and permissions to download and run software from the Internet.
To start the installation process, click on the appropriate RFB&D Download Manager link on the "My Downloads" page of the Online Ordering Center:

If you are running Safari, the installation may start automatically after it downloads. If not, save the file to your computer. By default, it will probably be saved to your Downloads folder. After download, locate the downloaded RFBDDownloadManager_Mac.zip file and double-click to extract the installation package. Then double-click the package to start the installation.

Click “Continue” to continue. You will be prompted to select a destination drive for the installation:

Select the drive onto which you wish to install the software and click “Continue” to continue. Your options will be confirmed:

Click “Install” to install the software. You will receive notices about the progress of the installation until it is complete:

Click the “Close” button to exit the installer. If you are using Firefox, then you must quit and restart Firefox to complete the installation of the Download Manager extension.
Configuration
Before downloading your first book, you may wish to customize the behavior of the RFB&D Download Manager. Things you may wish or need to change are:
- Folder into which to download your RFB&D books
- Proxy server settings (if you use a web proxy)
- Number of concurrent downloads
To configure, start the RFB&D Download Manager. Do this by double-clicking the Download_Manager icon in the Applications folder. This will start the RFB&D Download Manager:

To change the folder into which books are downloaded
Select the “RFB&D Options” tab:

Books will be stored in the “Save audio files in” folder. Click the “Browse” button to select a folder for your books, then click “Save Settings” to save this change.
To change the number of concurrent downloads
By default, the RFB&D Download Manager will try to download four files at a time. Depending on your available Internet bandwidth and other factors, you may find it more efficient and reliable to reduce this number. To do this, select the “Options” tab:

In the “Max number of Active Downloads” field, enter your desired number of concurrent downloads. Then click “Save Settings” to save this change.
To use a proxy server
If your internet connection uses a proxy server, RFB&D Download Manager must be told to use it. To do this, select the “Use a proxy server” box on the Options tab (see above), and enter the address and port information for that server.
Downloading
The Download Manager will start automatically when you click on a “Download” link on your “My Downloads” page:

A RFB&D Downloadable DAISY (AudioPlus) book is contained in a single ZIP file. This will appear in the RFB&D Download Manager “Current Status” tab:

As the file downloads, its status and completed percentage will update. When the file is completely downloaded, it will show a status of “Completed”:

At this point, you can quit the RFB&D Download Manager from the Download_Manager menu, or by pressing Command-Q.
To pause downloading, select all files either using the mouse or by pressing Command-A, then click the “Pause” button. You can restart by selecting the paused files and clicking the “Restart” button. If you wish to clear your download queue entirely, select all files and click the “Delete” button.
If for any reason you have to quit the RFB&D Download Manager while books are still in queue, you can restart by double-clicking the Download_Manager icon in the Applications folder.
Uninstalling
To uninstall the RFB&D Download Manager, you must first uninstall the Limelight Download Manager extension in Firefox (if you have Firefox installed). To do this, select “Add-ons” from the “Tools” menu:

Select the Limelight Download Manager and click the “Uninstall” button, and click “Uninstall” again when prompted to confirm this. You will need to restart Firefox to complete the uninstall. If you do not have Firefox installed on your computer, then you can skip this step.
To install the RFB RFB&D Download Manager application, simply drag the Download Manager folder from the Applications folder to the Trash.
Troubleshooting
-
When I click a download link in Safari, the Downloads window appears with a file with a .rfbd extension.
This is expected. Safari downloads the .rfbd file before launching the download manager. You can just close the Downloads window.
-
When I click a download link in Safari, the RFB&D Download Manager doesn’t start; it just downloads a file with a .rfbd extension.
This happens if you do not tell Safari to open “safe” files after download. You can set this option on the “General” tab of the Safari Preferences. If the RFB&D Download Manager still does not start automatically, you can launch it by double-clicking the .rfbd file in Safari’s Downloads window.
-
Safari displays a prompt asking if I am sure I want to open the Download_Manager application.
This may happen the first time you download a book. Just click the “Open” button to let Safari know that you want it to launch the RFB&D Download Manager automatically from now on.
