UC Davis: White House Hails Blind Chemistry Grad as "Champion of Change"

"The leaders we've selected as Champions of Change are proving that when the playing field is level, people with disabilities can excel in STEM, develop new products, create scientific inventions, open successful businesses, and contribute equally to the economic and educational future of our country."

Students at University of Delaware training to become Learning Ally volunteers who will produce accessible audiobooks for readers who are blind or learning disabled"Freshman Carly Goldrich knows what an image in a picture book looks like, but she is learning how to accurately describe it to someone who can't see it. Inspired by her brother, who has a learning disability, Goldrich is one of several university students training to make audio books for people who have learning disabilities or are visually impaired. The group began recruiting university students this semester."

Learning Ally member Stephanie Llorente is dyslexic and enjoys audiobooks for education and pleasure reading. “I was amazed at what Learning Ally does and immediately joined their program.  The organization began providing me audio versions of all my textbooks. Listening to the recordings while following along in the textbook has brought my reading comprehension up to the same level as my classmates and I understand what I am reading. I also found I enjoy books and I now listen to audio books for pleasure.”
