Kiva Smith

Kiva Jackson Smith was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of 12. She earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics education, and was a high school mathematics teacher for fifteen years. She recently earned a Masters of Social Work degree from Southern University at New Orleans. She began using Learning Ally in graduate school.

My advice to students who are able to take advantage of Learning Ally is to do so as soon as possible. It does not matter if you have to read one or twenty books, it will make a difference in your learning experience.

As a social worker, my future aspirations are to advocate for more resources for people who are visually impaired or blind people in schools and to develop an outreach group for students, family members, educators, and employers.  As well as to bring awareness to the importance of accommodations and resources for visually impaired and blind people to succeed, and to continue my research on the effectiveness of pre-employment preparedness programs on blind people obtaining competitive employment. My dream is to earn a doctorate degree, and to start a virtual therapy group for people who are visually impaired or blind people.
