Categories: In the News

PRINCETON, NJ; November 27, 2012—NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NRG) raised more than $150,000 to benefit Princeton-based Learning Ally, a national nonprofit learning accessibility organization, at NRG’s ninth annual employee picnic in late September. Funds were raised by NRG employees through silent and live auctions of donated items and direct contributions from NRG’s suppliers and vendors, with the total matched dollar-for-dollar by NRG. “The employees of NRG have proudly supported Learning Ally in the past through our volunteer efforts, so we know firsthand the good work this organization does for our community and for those who need learning assistance across the country,” said Patti Helfer, NRG’s Chief Administrative Officer. “As a major corporate citizen of central New Jersey and on behalf of our business partners, it is our privilege to make this substantial donation to help Learning Ally in their admirable mission to promote learning for everyone.” Learning Ally helps individuals of all ages who are unable to read standard print due to blindness and visual impairment, learning disabilities like dyslexia, and physical disabilities. The organization provides access to the world’s largest collection of human-read audio textbooks for students in K-12, college, graduate school and beyond. “Learning Ally deeply appreciates this show of support from our friends at NRG,” said Jim Halliday, Executive Vice President. “Although we are a national organization, our impact is strongly felt at the local level in schools and homes across the U.S. Countless children and adults with print disabilities will benefit from your generous donations of time and financial support.” Last year, NRG donated more than $700,000 and hundreds of volunteer hours to New Jersey nonprofit organizations through NRG Global Giving, the company’s employee-led corporate responsibility program. Since 2004, NRG has given more than $15 million in contributions and grants—plus countless thousands of volunteer hours of service—to non-profit organizations that benefit local communities.
