Position: Student Services Director

Location: Princeton, New Jersey

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Purpose of the Position: Learning Ally is seeking an energetic leader to create and direct our new and existing programs for K-12 and college transition youth programs. The leader will work across the organization and with volunteers, parents, teachers and students to build a vibrant and supportive community of student ambassadors and mentors with the objective of ensuring all students have every opportunity to succeed in school and beyond. The leader will create and deliver curriculum based programming and resources for blind, visually impaired or dyslexic students. This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

Primary Position Objectives

  • Expand the youth advocacy program and develop school based youth programming with the objective of enabling students with dyslexia to understand how they learn, know what tools they need to be successful and prepare them to advocate for themselves.
    • Create grade-based curriculum and programs for youth ambassador and mentees
    • Partner with Learning Ally schools to deliver, virtual, in-school and after-school mentor support
    • Grow our national in-person and virtual hub-based youth advocacy program
    • Recruit youth mentors and volunteers to build the community
    • Identify and engage philanthropic support from mentors, parents and teachers
  • Expand the college success program for blind or visually impaired students to include additional students, resources and programming. Partner with Fund Development to ensure program funding is well established and maintained.

    • Build out Blind and Visually impaired (BVI) thought leadership presence
  • Communicate and actively engage staff in discussions around goals, priorities and individual performance expectations through formal mid and end of year reviews as well as informal weekly 1:1 conversations. Ensure all reporting staff understands and is working effectively toward business goals and individual objectives with development plans focused on these priorities.
  • Responsible for selecting, managing, coaching, and evaluating staff to ensure continual individual growth and development towards progressively higher performing teams. Implement ongoing staff engagement activities, and ensure clear and effective communication channels are in place.
  • Foster a working environment that supports Learning Ally’s cultural values. Act as a role model and actively engage in giving and receiving feedback to ensure the intent of the culture statement is integrated into day-to- day activities, planning and communications.

Job Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Masters in social work, education, public administration or other related field preferred

Work experience

  • 2-3 years of relevant experience as a community school director or in education, youth development, social work, community organizing or another related field

Specific Skills/Knowledge

  • Experience or knowledge of mentoring programs and their training requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders in the school
  • Understanding of special needs communities and schools
  • Working knowledge of community outreach and organizing principles a plus
  • Awareness of special education K-12 law, as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act for college or transition age students preferred
  • Ability to track and manage a program budget as well as negotiate agreements with other organizations
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment, flexible, organized with a can-do attitude and a high degree of autonomy
  • Interest in and comfort with working with data to inform practice
  • Strong presentation and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check and clearance by Department of Education

Supervisory Experience

  • Proven experience in managing developing, coaching and motivating staff
  • Ability to foster an environment of positive teamwork
  • Ability to inspire staff and help them succeed

Schedule and Travel

  • Periodic evenings and weekends
  • Some travel may be required
